NEW DELHI, INDIA: Qualcomm Incorporated, a developer of advanced wireless technologies, products and services, which recently won bid for Mumbai and Delhi circles in the BWA auction, said that tomorrow it will announce the Indian partner for meeting the FDI norms in the country.
While making this announcement here today, a Qualcomm executive said that the Indian partner will have 26 per cent share in the new venture for meeting the FDI norms of the Government of India.
“The partnership that we are going to announce is to meet the requirement of the Government of India to do business here,” said Kanwalinder Singh, president, Qualcomm India. “We have said earlier that when the network roll out will happen it will take place either with 3G service providers or e-video service providers in India.”
Partnership with an Indian company was the condition put forward by the Department of Telecommunications for foreign players who are participating in the 3G and BWA auctions, because a Unified Access Services (UAS) license or an Internet Service Provider (ISP) license can only be awarded to an Indian company, as per DoT guidelines.
However, they are allowed to participate in the auctions directly and apply for or acquire a license subsequently through an Indian company, where they hold at least 26 per cent equity stake.
