Make a gesture your PC will respond

BANGALORE, INDIA: Mouse and keypad on your PC may soon become a thing of the past as new technology is set to give birth to next generation PCs which can accept commands from human in the way of hand gestures, gaze and speech.

On Tuesday at EmTech 2010, Anbumani Subramanian, research scientist of HP Labs and Krishnan Ramanathan, senior research scientist, HP Labs talked in great detail about intuitive interface.

While talking about intuitive interaction between computer and human, Subramanian said, “With the use of multi-mode interfaces of communication the computer can actually understand the commands by the user and follow accordingly,” he said.

Subramanian said that an ideal computer has various interfaces like Camera, touchpad, microphone and keyboard that take the input. But in the solution he presented, with the help of these interfaces the computer follows the command.

Elaborating about his innovation, he said, “ We use computer-based hand gesture recognition technology for giving the input command. However, there are challenges of right analysis of the gesture, speech, gaze, like the movement of the hand should be recognized irrespective of the speed of the movement, it should bring reliability and be real time in nature.”

Based on the concept of temporal integration, the software reads the hand movement and enables the pictures to move in a slide show, change the speed of pictures and also the size of the pictures accordingly.
