MTNL targets 3 lakh 3G customers by 2010 end

MUMBAI, INDIA: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) Mumbai, the state run telco which provides telephony services in Mumbai and Delhi, is focusing on value- added services (VAS) for its 3G platform to increase revenues as well as expand its customer base, keeping in view the upcoming competitions from other telcos on 3G front.

MTNL Mumbai executive director J Gopal said, “Since the launch of our 3G Jadoo services last year, we have about one lakh customers that are using various 3G enabled services.”

“However, with more telcos launching their 3G services by end of this year we are targeting about 3 lakh subscribers for 3G in Mumbai by 2010 end,” Gopal told CyberMedia News today in Mumbai, on sidelines of a conference.

“Since huge investments have been made in 3G service space, we would be looking at increasing the revenues by focusing on VAS and new 3G based services,” he stressed.

At preset, we are offering various 3G services such as video-calling, video-conferencing, video-download, video SMS, video-greetings, high speed data and location based services, he added.

Moreover, MTNL Mumbai will launch a new 3G based service called MRBT (Multimedia Ring-Back Tone) service in next month, Gopal informed.

MRBT allows the users to view and hear a multi-media ring tone, which basically is a video clip of the caller. At present most telcos are offering CRBT (Caller Ring-Back Tone) and this VAS is considered a major revenue source for the telecos today.
