DoT may ask RIM to set up server in India

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Research In Motion (RIM), the makers of BlackBerry, which is facing the threat of ban in many countries including India, has reportedly made a fresh attempt to break the logjam over its services in India by offering 'metadata' and relevant information to security agencies which will enable them in lawful interception but has failed to enthuse them.

According to minutes of the meeting between government officials and Canadian firm Research in Motion (RIM), makers of BlackBerry, RIM representatives explained that BlackBerry mobile device sends the encrypted email which is sent to BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) located with the service provider, said a PTI report.

But the security agencies are not satisfied with this, as they want an uninterrupted access to the messaging services on the BlackBerry platform. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is likely to ask RIM to set up a server in India as it has agreed in Saudi Arabia to help intercept the data on its phones.

A Saudi official said on Sunday that the BlackBerry maker and Saudi mobile firms are testing three servers to send communications and data through Saudi Arabia before Canada to address Riyadh's concerns over security.

As reported earlier by CIOL, the DoT expects to reach a conclusion on Blackberry services in India by the end of this month as the discussions between the department and Research in Motion is still on.

India had recently warned RIM that if it failed to address its security concerns it would face closure.

Anil Sardana, managing director, Tata Teleservices had told CIOL thst operators cannot stop Blackberry services and the government will have to finally ban Blackberry handsets on telecom network in case no amicable solution is reached between RIM and the Government of India.

Meanwhile, Bahrain's foreign minister said the country has no plans to follow its Persian Gulf neighbors in banning some BlackBerry services becauseBlackberry Pearl 3G.

According to Bahrain's Sheik Khaled bin Ahmed Al Khalifa the handheld devices raise legitimate concerns, but that his nation has decided that banning some of the phones' features is "not a way of dealing with it", an
Associated Press report quoted him as saying.
