BANGALORE, INDIA: WikiLeaks’s payment provider DataCell, which was planning to proceed legal action against Visa and MasterCard for blocking the financial donations to the whistle blower site, has said that now it is able to accept credit-card payments.
Since December 7, 2010, following the Wikileaks expose that crated a storm globally, DataCell was not able to process Visa and Mastercard payments or payments by other international credit cards, as the payment gateway was closed by Teller A/S, the company providing the payment gateway.
Following this DataCell said on July 2, 2011 that it would go ahead with a legal action again the providers, alleging that the blockade was on the instructions by Visa and Mastercard.
However, on Thursday it said that the gateway seems to be opened.
“...today we have observed that an alternative payment processor that we have contracted with, has in fact opened the gateway for payments with Visa and Mastercard, and now also for American Express Card payments, which is an option we did not have before,” DataCell said in a statement on Thursday.
“We choose to interpret this, as that Visa and Mastercard has in fact given in to our demand that the payment services was reinstated. In other words, DataCell is happy to report that we are now able again to process donations to Wikileaks,” the statement added.
It said donations to Wikileaks can be made again on https://donations.datacell.com/
However, according to a Fortune report, Visa said that they did not reinstate Datacell and “are looking into how transactions are being made”.
Visa and MasterCard blocked the gateway after WikiLeaks began publishing about 250,000 controversial US State Department cables that tarnished the image of the US in the global front. Following the blockade and the movement against the website, Wikileaks supports had even attacked many websites including that of MasterCard.
PayPal, a unit of Ebay, had also suspended payments to the website and it has not yet lifted the ban.
