BSNL network can collapse at anytime
Sources said that BSNL’s MPLS network has noticed traffic load of up to 80 per cent on the network in its peak hour on its core network, whereas typical loading should not exceed more than 50 per cent of its rated capacity

If this is true then BSNL should try to get to the root cause of network overloading. For data networks it could be the unwanted traffic such as viruses, malware, spam etc that eat up the available bandwidth. It might be that BSNL just requires a clean pipe solution to free its wasted bandwith before it plans to upgrade its network.

Vishal said on 11/2/2010 11:52:35 AM:
This article is fallacious at best, wherein the author has done no ground work. The facts have been distorted. First and foremost, whenever BSNL places a Purchase order on any OEM, it is an open tender and thus there is "price-discovery" which takes place. I presume BSNL did purchase Cisco gear through an open RFP, wherein Cisco competitors like Juniper also participated (NIB II). Thus it was an open and transparent process! Secondly, after these price bench marks are set neither Cisco nor BSNL can increase the price, because that will go against government buying process, and hence question of Cisco holding BSNL to ransom does not exist. thirdly, BSNL network has Juniper, Redback, Huawei routers besides Cisco. The moot question is whether any of these companies support a different OEM interface card on their router. The answer is "No". The connotation of interoperability is not correct as it is an Industry practice. No vendor today supports interface cards of different vendor in their product, and Cisco should not be singled out, as it abides to the Industry definition of interoperability. Analogy is that one cannot use steering wheel of Maruti 800 into Mercedez. Cisco is better, in that you could use the steering wheel of M 800 in Zen, Estilo, Wagon R, SX4 etc etc (which no one else does)? Infact Cisco is much better as it supports interface cards across all its series of products, unlike all other OEMs who do not even support their own cards from one series to other series.

I too had aired some view about one of the articles in Business Standard (by Mr. Jain) but it was conveniently blocked and were never put online. Is this is done as per some particular strategy? Transparency being advocated by media is not being adopted by certain segment of same. I think that this biased attitude stops to create a balanced view on the subject. Hope the better sense prevail.

Being one of the telecom consultants in the country, I have a mixed reaction for this report. First there is a huge subscriber base for BSNL and it has increased pressure on its bandwidth. However I have noticed that BSNL follows all the govt rules and procedure when it comes to installing towers. If we consider that, some of the BSNL towers and under utilised. BSNL plans to upgrade its towers based on the traffic. I can tell that BSNL network won't collapse. Thanks

i fully agree with you jitender.from my experience i can say govt PSU work exactly the way described in the article. so it is not surprising that the network is about to collapse. Let this govt buchaas for once wake up and do what is necessary. Lazy goons who are out there only to make money and nothing else

Dont buff yourself.. i have given my official mail id at bsnl.co.in and deleting comment show the real motive behind this fake news. For your knowledge i am working in BSNL NIB from last 1 year, so i know very well what is BSNL MPLS, its load capacity, tolerance and other parameters.

This page took an inordinate time to load on my Airtel Corporate connection as well. Maybe, the site owners need to do something about their bandwidth. BSNL may have some technically inferior people but I am confident that it has enough technical resources to predict and address a serious issue like network collapse. The article is heresy and poor sensationlist journalism.
