BANGALORE, INDIA: IT major Wipro Infotech announced on Thursday that it has been awarded outsourcing contract worth Rs. 1,182 crore from Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).
ESIC is a statutory corporation, under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, and is the implementing agency of a pioneering social security scheme in India.
Wipro has been selected to implement ESIC's Project 'Panchdeep' which is aimed at improving healthcare services to its beneficiaries, by providing online facilities to employers and insured people for registration, payment of premium and disbursement of cash benefits, said a press release.
Other modules will provide HR, finance and general administration programs for increasing the organizational efficiency.
"It is an honour to be awarded one of the most prestigious e-Governance projects. This is a strategic relationship for Wipro and we are committed to making it a showcase in the e-governance domain," said Anand Sankaran, senior vice president and head, India and Middle East, Wipro Infotech.
The project was mandated by ESI Act 1948 with a focus on creating a medicare backbone for the marginalized sections of society, said the release.
The five parts of this project are termed as Pehchan, Milap, Pashan, Dhanwantri and Pragati which include identification of more than one crore subscribers and their family members covered under ESIC, connecting all locations of ESIC.

ESIC invited bids for Project Panchdeep on Built-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model through a global tender published on November 25, 2008.
Three bids were received from the top 3 IT giants namely TCS, Wipro and Infosys and after a detailed project consultancy, efficient evaluation and a very fair and transparent process, ESIC awarded the 6 and half year project to Wipro, added the release.
TCS, recently had reportedly filed a complaint to the Labour Ministry regarding the ESIC deal handed over to Wipro.
