NEW DELHI, INDIA: Vodafone said on Friday it had filed a response, detailing the Indian authorities' tax claim on its $11.2 billion purchase of Hutchison Telecom's Indian operations in 2007 was not sustainable.
"The response, and annexures, total over 1,800 pages and detailed the reasons why Vodafone believes the tax department does not have the jurisdiction to seek to tax the Hutchison transaction," the British mobile phone operator said in a statement.
India's tax department had issued a notice to the company on October 30.
Vodafone has said it was confident it was not liable for tax on the deal. Indian media have estimated the tax demand at about $2 billion.
