Vodafone Essar CEO to retire on March 31

MUMBAI, INDIA: Asim Ghosh, the chief executive of Vodafone Essar Ltd, the India unit of Vodafone Group Plc, will retire from the company on March 31, 2009.

The company said Marten Pieters, who was earlier the CEO of Celtel International BV, a leading pan-African cellphone operator, will be the next CEO.

He is currently a director on the board of Luxembourg-based Millicom International Cellular SA. Ghosh, 61, took over the operations of what is now Vodafone Essar in August 1998, when it was a single licence area operator with 140,000 subscribers, said a press release.

Now the company has pan-India presence with 63 million subscribers.

“Asim did a tremendous job as chief executive. He has led from the front to grow the company in size and stature, and built a strong team comprising the finest talent in the industry. I look forward to working with Marten to build on the strong platform established by Asim,” said, Ravi Ruia, vice chairman, Essar Group and Chairman of Vodafone Essar.

"We started on our ride in Mumbai in 1998. We never realised then what a roller coaster it would be. Today, serving tens of millions of subscribers, with a fabulous team, a great brand, a company with a great future, it's been a ride I wouldn't exchange for anything else," Ghosh said, adding, "With Marten, the company will be in great hands."

Ghosh will continue as a non-executive member on the board of Vodafone Essar, the company said.
