NEW DELHI, INDIA: As the telecom sector is marred with apparent chaos due to cancellation of 122 licenses coupled with the department of telecommunication (DoT) imposing penalties and levies, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) - the country's largest service providers' body, while clearing the mist, told that there will be no tariff hike insight.
Speaking to CIOL, Rajan S Mathews, director general COAI, said that there will be no tariff hike as the affected operators have nearly 5 per cent market share as well as the Supreme Court has given them four months.
In case these telcos leave the market, then there would still be seven players competing heavily with each other. ''Going ahead, there will be a market consolidation, and it all depends upon how new licenses will be distributed,'' Mathews informed.
The association also said that there is an apparent uncertainty, and it may remain till the time TRAI comes up with new recommendations and licensing regime.
The Apex court has on Thursday asked the government to enable new framework for licenses and spectrum allocation. It also said that affected companies could continue their business and can bid for fresh licenses.
