PUNE, INDIA:When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat. When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist. When they came for the Jews, I remained silent; I wasn't a Jew. When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out This is what a group on Facebook called "Mumbai Terror Attacks: I condemn it" shouts out. And it is not just one group or one member venting out their exasperation. Members on social networking sites are coming together and showing their anger without mincing any words as they watch and wonder at the hostage and grenade drama that has taken Mumbai under siege in the last few hours and left the nation dumbfounded. On Facebook, an angry Akansha Krissiani asks, "dis is maddening...i mean taj is like d heritage of mumbai..nd watching it burn away, ...how can dese 20 sumthings be so devilish...." And just a scroll across the wall posts appearing out in a few hours since Mumbai is fighting a new war drama, we can see outraged reactions like these boiling all over. "just shoot these bloody rats, in their own homes," "I was at Leopold cafe 2days back n was suppose to go there again 2mrw...I wish i was der and killed those two f..... terrorists that bursted firing at Leo's even if i wud have sacrificed my life...atleast 2 less wud have diminished d terror a lil bit." "It's a sad sad day:(" Reactions are strong. But they vary. From blood-boiling pique to resigned resentment to intelligent and calm suggestions, the reactions even culminate to a ground-level movement. Vishal Jatiani says it well in a post this noon. "aggar mere haath mein rifle hota to dushman ko fanah kardeta ... GOD BLESS INDIA ... MUMBAI STILL ROCKS ... JEALOUS COUNTRY TRIES TO POLUTE .. GANDHIGIRI .. SMILE AND CLEAN IT ... KYA MAMUUU ( MUNNA BHAI )." In fact, while the chagrin is boiling all over with heated comments being posted against politicians, government, neighbor governments, Uncle Sam and even Mumbai Manoos forces, there are composed voices like Sam Pasupalak who urge to stop the blame game and start some action at the ground level. "we are not here to blame one another.....this is what we have been doing for the last 60 years.....as a result India is still a developing nation.......we need to find a solution to this problem......not find other sources of problems" Another cool-headed observation comes from Nishant Jain. "I think more important is to understand the spirit and enthusiasm these terrorists are fighting with. For now almost 24 hours they have still managed to retain their position and fight against our army, NSG, navy, ATS and likewise other special task forces. Obviously they are fighting for a larger cause after being brain washed." Sid on Orkut feels that it is this kind of Irrationality that is one day going to destroy the basic foundation of a nation. "...perhaps, i would like to remind you that one rotten apple doesn't spoil the entire bunch. The fact of the matter is majority of the Muslim community demanded that these terrorists be punished to the severest extent. By giving the terrorist his religious designation, we are giving them a human face, which in reality they are not." And enraged citizens like Krish Varsh are all set to start an online-fuelled movement on their own. On a new community titled Mumbai Meri Jaan with about 550 members, his anguished call says it all. "imagine being at Leopolds the famous cafe at Colaba and being shot down by terrorists by AK 47. I dont want to imagine this. I dont want this. I dont want to get out of my house and worry whether i will reach home alive. I dont want to think that when my friends go for a coffee, they wil be held hostages in the best and oldest hotel of the city or being shot for holding foreign passports....I dont want to get down a train and fear being shot bullets through my body or fear being blown away to pieces for simply walking by a street....I stand to make my city terror free..i stand for peace. I stand for my dream to make this city MUMBAI the safest city in the world." Sam from Toronto, ON, scribbles a strong message. "Instead of sitting in your homes and praying god do something.....wake up fellow Indians....this isn't the time to sit back, relax and enjoy the winter in your warm homes.....create an awareness among everyone.....everyone be united and discuss solutions to this problem in a new and innovative approach as Indians of the 21st century......whatever the need be we will stand up to it." And that's why we find Chaitnya Mungi writing on Facebook, "This is for everyone who wants Mumbai 2 b a safer place....let do it wid RDB style....lets take Photographs of all those brave officers who lost their lives....lets take candles n go for a rally after this operation is over...if v dnt make Government realise it now, we can never do it again !!!" It's hard to ignore these voices and it sounds that this time the anger would take long to quell.
