Soon clouds will speak to each other

BANGALORE, INDIA: The next generation of Internet will see a new avatar of cloud as Inter-cloud and cover various verticals like healthcare, governance, education etc. and this would not come through any enterprise or an individual, but a cluster of experts, who would be domain experts.

In the first session of the Vision 2020-Leadership series at BangaloreIT.biz, Padamsree Warrior, CTO, Cisco Telepresence, shared that moving from what it is today, the 'cloud' will adopt a larger role in IT enablement. She said, “As Internet evolved from local network to wide area network, and further to the world wide web, cloud is following the road map from companies maintaining their stand-alone data center, to moving into virtual public cloud. Their next step is to adopt hybrid cloud with some application on the cloud and finally to move to inter-cloud, where the clouds would speak to each other.”

Soon cloud enabled IT will be able to help in heath care through tele-medicine, where patients in remote area can consult a doctor via telepresence infrastructure. In education, Internet can help in imparting affordable education through telepresence and help more and more people complete their primary education and also the secondary education.

She explained that cloud infrastructure is based on four basic foundations namely media transporter like voice and video, collaboration platforms, sustainability on connectivity and virtualization. Talking about telepresence, as an example, she said, “The future Internet would bring mobility and more collaboration. If email was the killer app in the first generation, video would be the killer app of next generation. Therefore, we at Cisco are constantly working toward enabling video in our routers and switches. And we came with telepresence. With telepresence, we can work, attend meetings from any location. In fact, four to five years from now, we would not go to work, but we would do work. This would also mean lesser travel and more time for ourselves.”

But as every road faces a road block, cloud adoption is basically facing two major challenges- on SLA side and interoperability - easy upgrade and also downgrade of the applications. Other challenges that Cisco personally has been facing are compliance, scalability, complexity, Internal security, national security, regulatory norms, government norms etc.
