PM inaugurates TCS training center in Assam

The initiative is to open the IT doors to the northeastern states in India

BANGALORE, INDIA: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today officially inaugurated the new training center of the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Guwahati, Assam. The Prime Minister also made joint address to the current batch of TCS trainees and IIT students.

It is the first Indian IT Company to invest in the north east of India, TCS said in a press release.

According to the company, the new learning center is based at the sprawling IIT campus in Guwahati. It has the capacity to train up to 200 professionals at one time and is already operational.

The trainees in the learning center can also have access to all facilities on the IIT campus including classrooms, library, sports and recreational facilities, the release said.

TCS had signed an MoU with IIT-Guwahati and the Assam Government in March 2008 to set up a dedicated training facility in the state. It would also collaborate with IIT, Guwahati in research and development efforts based on mutual interest.

“TCS has always been a pioneer in developing talent in the country. The dedicated training center in Guwahati now extends this commitment to develop the abundant talent available in the north east,” said S Ramadorai, chief executive officer and managing director, TCS.

“We are deeply honored by the presence of one of India’s most dynamic leaders Dr Manmohan Singh at the training facility today,” he added.

It has been closely partnering with various northeastern states in the country to implement several e-governance projects in the region.

“Almost 300 people have already been trained at the Guwahati center. This initiative to further enhance the suitability of talent here will help link talent from the north east of the country to the fast-growing Indian IT industry,” said Ajoy Mukherjee, vice president and head, Global HR, TCS.

TCS has plans to increase interoperability of various government machineries in the six northeastern states of Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

Is this talent development too little and perhaps late? Further, what use is talent if new thinking, new industries, new research, new products etc are not originated, researched and designed in India? Surely, service sectors such as Tata and Wipro is not good enough for tommorows India or Asia.
