NEW DELHI, INDIA: IDC India, the leading technology based research company and a subsidiary of CyberMedia, today announced the report on India client PC market which reported a growth of the 8.1per cent year-on-year (2Q 2008 over 2Q 2007) in terms of unit shipments to record sales (shipments) of 2.085 million during the April- June 2008.
It reported that desktop PC shipments displayed a drop of 2.4 per cent, while notebook PC shipments showed a growth of 51.2 per cent.
In the overall client PC (notebooks and desktops combined) market, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 18.7 per cent, followed by HCL at second spot and Dell moving up to the third spot during 2Q 2008, said the press release.
HP retained its top position in desktop PC shipments by posting a market share of 13.9 per cent followed by HCL and Dell in second and third position. It also bagged the notebook shipment with a 31.2 per cent market share, followed by DELL and Acer. "With the Indian economy expected to grow only at 7.5-8.0 per cent in the April 2008-March 2009 fiscal, the Q2 2008 (April-June 2008) performance was affected by cautious PC buying," said Kapil Dev Singh, Country Manager, IDC India.
He added that the subdued sentiment derives its signals from high petroleum prices, rising inflation, political uncertainty in the last quarter and news of the impending US economic slowdown.
Sumanta Mukherjee, analyst, Computing Products Research, IDC India, said "Major global and Indian PC vendors promoted 'low-cost notebook PC' offerings during the quarter. The growth of these upgradeable notebook PCs will be driven to a large extent by the penetration of broadband connectivity and availability of appropriate content."
