Obamas CTO Chopra meets Silicon Valley leaders

WASHINGTON, USA: Making his first appearance as federal CTO in Silicon Valley, Aneesh Chopra told a Silicon Valley audience that President Obama wants to use technology to advance his goals of improved health care, energy independence and education, and wants the valley’s help in doing that.

He also said government and industry need to work together more efficiently to spur innovation in areas such as healthcare IT and the smart grid.

Chopra said his most important daily role as federal CTO is that of translator and mediator between technologists and business people, in which he tries to bridge the gap between business needs and what actually gets developed.

Chopra, who is an adviser to the president, is tasked with finding ways through legislation or initiatives from the executive branch, to use technology to make government work better and serve its people.

“We want to harness technology and innovation to transform the economy,” Chopra told an audience of about 350 people at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California recently.

Chopra was picked as CTO by Obama in May. Previously he had been the Secretary of Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Obama had also appointed Vivek Kundra as the chief information officer.

White House's acting cyber-security adviser Melissa Hathaway had recently announced that she was withdrawing herself from consideration for the post on a permanent basis and would be resigning on August 21. The cyber-security adviser works with government and private industry to protect computer networks from attack from criminals or terrorists.

“Despite Melissa Hathaway’s resignation, we are working fast and furious on these goals,” Chopra said.
