Nilekani to take charge of UIDAI next week

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Infosys co-founder and former co-chairman of the Indian IT giant, Nandan Nilekani will take charge as the Chairperson of the newly set up Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) next week. As the head of the UIDAI project, Nilekani will get the rank of a Cabinet Minister.

"I will join office in Delhi next week," said Nilekani on the sidelines of the sixth National Policy Forum organized by National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) here on Tuesday. However, he did not comment on the developments going at UIDAI or the current status of the project.

"It will take me months to put everything in place before I can comment on the status," said Nilekani.

Nilekani had relinquished his post of co-chairman at Infosys on July 9 to take charge of UIDAI. In the Union Budget for 2009-10, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had announced allocation of Rs. 120 crore, though the amount is negligible compared to the expected expenditure of the mammoth project.

UIDAI will set up online data base with identity and biometric details of Indian residents and provide enrollment and verification services across country.
