LOS ANGELES, USA: Microsoft kick started Professional Developer Conference (PDC) 2008 to a packed audience here.

On Day one of the three-day conference that brings developers, partners and customers of Microsoft from across the world, Ray Ozzie, chief software architect at Microsoft talked about the company's ability to bring new apps meeting the challenges of the enterprise computing landscape.

He attributed that the company's core strengths lies in bringing new applications, creating a critical mass and solutions that's right for the enterprise community. In his keynote address Ozzie talked about concepts like cloud computing, virtualization and how those are changing the face of enterprise computing.

In a major development he unveiled Windows Azure (a cloud based operating system) officially-- the newest platform from the company's stable.

The platform aimed for the developers is collection of offerings like .Net, Dynamics CRM, SQL Server, Share Point and Live Services.

According to Ozzie, he described Azure as a platform that integrates the cloud based developer capabilities with all the necessary eco-systems like storage, computational and networking infrastructure service all hosted on the servers operating with-in the Microsoft global datacenter network.

The interesting thing about Azure is it is platform based; hence this brings in a high degree of flexibility and agility to developers in creating numerous solutions. Also they can bank on various open source development tools and technologies.

Banking on the new platform, developers can take the advantage of key components of Azure like Live Services for users to store, share and synchronize documents like pictures, files and information across their PCs, phones, PC based applications and web sites.

According to Ozzie, "The Azure launch is a turning point for the Microsoft developer community. It is game changing set of technologies that will bring in new opportunities to both business and web developers. The Azure service platform promises to transforms the way businesses operate and how consumers access their information and access the web."

Azure Demystified

According to the company the Azure Services Platform is an internet-scale cloud services platform hosted in Microsoft data centers, which provides an operating system and a set of developer services that can be used individually or together.

Being flexible and interoperable platform, developers can use this platform to build new applications to run from the cloud or enhance existing applications with cloud-based capabilities. Its open architecture gives developers the choice to build web applications, applications running on connected devices, PCs, servers, or hybrid solutions offering the best of online and on-premises.

However this calls for having robust remote delivery capabilities. Given this Microsoft has created robust data centers for the online delivery of solutions.

The company has opened state of the art data centers and ramping up aggressively both in US and UK. Azure is touted as a platform that will reduce the need for up-front technology purchases, and it enables developers to quickly and easily creates applications running in the cloud by using their existing skills with the Microsoft Visual Studio development environment and the Microsoft. NET Framework.

In addition to manage code languages supported by .NET, Azure will support more programming languages and development environments in the near future. Azure simplifies maintaining and operating applications by providing on-demand compute and storage to host, scale, and manage web and connected applications.
