Logica to expand India footprint

The priority of the IT services firm is to grow its business in India, set up new locations and facilities

BANGALORE, INDIA: Anglo-Dutch IT services firm Logica will open a 1500-people strong facility in Chennai by August this year, as part of the company’s priority to grow its business in India, set up new locations and facilities.

The center, with a capacity to house 1500 more people, will provide application services, infrastructure management and BPO services, said Abhay Gupte, CEO of the firm in India, while addressing the media here today.

Logica also plans to double its headcount in India by 2009-end, said Gupte, who recently joined the company from EDS.

The firm currently employs 3000 people in the country.

Incidentally, the company had in April announced in a statement that it would cut 1,300 jobs worldwide and double its offshore operations as part of a £110 million revival plan.

The firm is planning to foray into more verticals in India.

"Right now we are into the BFSI and telecom segments. We are working with RBI, Bank of Baroda and ABN Amro Bank, and have a major presence in bank-to-bank transfer. We may venture into the government service space in another one year from now," said GBS Bindra, global innovation director of the company.

He stressed the need for the government to make policy announcements.

Though he declined to elaborate on this point, he said, “India is ready for such policy announcements.”

Gupte added: "We have a very small presence in the Indian domestic market. However, India is opening up for newer technologies and being an already-established company in providing solutions, we are confident of tapping them at the early stage itself. Once the government announces the approval, we will be there.”

The firm, formerly known as LogicaCMG, which reported revenues to the tune of £3,073.2 million for the financial year ended December 31, 2007, is optimistic of bagging more business from the growing European markets, as the US is facing a slowdown.

“If you go by media reports, large deals Indian companies had made in the last six months were in Europe. It shows where the growth is coming from. This in itself is a good sign for us. Being a Europe-based company, we are uniquely positioned in that market place," said Bindra.

He added that Logica wants to bring European expertise to India in five verticals it is present: energy and utilities; industry, distribution and transport; telecoms and media; financial services and public sector.

The company, which reverted to its original name Logica in February this year, feels more solutions used in Europe are being brought to India, as the country is now ready for such solutions.

EURIDICE

Logica today also announced that it has begun work on an intelligent cargo system, EURIDICE, which will establish advanced information services for freight transportation in Europe.

The system, European interdisciplinary Research on Intelligent Cargo for Efficient Safe and Environmentally-Friendly logistics (EURIDICE), is co-funded by the European Commission.

The project is scheduled to be completed by 2011, said Bindra. The firm’s Spark Innovation Center in Bangalore is playing a key role in the development of the system.

The system will provide enhanced security to international trade users’ consignments. It harnesses information from a range of track and trace technologies such as RFID, GPRS and satellite positioning to provide information about cargo in transit.
