BSNL plans to extend the Wi Max connectivity to the entire state in a year

KOCHI, KERALA: Kerala will very soon join the prestigious WiMax – wireless broadband in common man's parlance – club. BSNL is bringing the entire state under the WiMax cover along with a few select states namely Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab.

"In the first phase we will introduce the system in the cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode and major towns of Kannur, Thrissur, Kottayam and Kollam. We hope that the facility could be provided to our customers in these places within five months, perhaps a bit earlier,'' said BSNL Kerala Circle general manager (general) Haribabu.

BSNL is planning to extend the Wi Max (World Interoperability for Microwave Access) connectivity to the entire state in a year or so.

Though the service provider is yet to decide the price of the service, Haribabu hints that it will be a little costlier than the net through cables. "It is worth as it is amazingly fast and user-friendly," he said.

BSNL officials are tight lipped on the cost of the project. Since it is a central project, the financial part is taken care of by its corporate office in Delhi, they added.

Haribabu does not expect that other telecom majors which have already made their presence felt in the State will enter Kerala WiMax market in the near future.

Will this make the other net providing systems redundant?

"Not at all. On the contrary, with the introduction of the new system, the State will emerge as a better shopping place for netizens. A housewife who has limited use of net can go for the conventional cable system. A moving youth can depend on his G-3 mobile for his net activities. For a traveling a businessman who is always glued to his laptop, WiMax is very handy. So the new system will only widen the choice of net connection in the State,"' avers Haribabu.

Anyhow net connection is expected to change the destiny of IT industry in Kerala. WiMax connectivity will definitely further deepen the net penetration in the State. Moreover, it will enable the State to emerge as the Silicon Valley of the country.

Across the world, IT industry is moving interiors to save cost. Kerala with a fairly better road-rail-air connectivity, high social indices and evenly distributed manpower makes a better bet. There is bleak side too to this rosy picture.

Cyber security experts fear that WiMax may make Kerala the safe heaven for extremists, unless the service providers restrict the access to only authorized users.

But BSNL believes that such fear is uncalled for. "Chances are next to nothing for WiMax being hacked and misused by unauthorized users,'' affirms BSNL General Manager (Development) Charley Mathew.

However, security men are not ready to take chance.

State Cyber cell chief I..G. Loknath Bahara warns the service providers that they should take measures to prevent unauthorized entry into the net through WiMax. "Once BSNL completes the installation, we will closely monitor the system," he says.
