BANGALORE, INDIA: The Government of Karnataka has decided to set up the second State Data Center (SDC) to enhance the infrastructure required for consolidating state level applications. It would start rolling the Request for Proposal (RFP) within 15 days.

Speaking to CIOL, M.N.Vidyashankar, Principal Secretary, e-Governance Department, Government of Karnataka, said the second data center would be fully managed infrastructure and services.

"Initially the new set up would be for five years and then subsequently extendible for another five years. The new data center will be settled in Vikas Soudha, and our existing data center will become a Disaster Recovery Center. We would migrate all the applications from the existing SCD to the new one."

The existing DR center is running in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), with green capability including virtualization and other technologies.

Within a fortnight's time, the government would roll-out the first RFP for the second data center. This SDC is expected to be completed by June 2010. It would be a state-of-the-art data center with a 50 TB (terabyte) of data base managed capacity. The existing SDC has 24 TB of data, supporting all state projects.

"Our State Wide Area Network (SWAN) will start running by the first of the coming month, which would require a robust data center," he added. Vidyashankar is expecting huge response form the six major IT players in the city.

The SDC serves multiple purposes such as establishing central data repository, provide disaster recovery services, serves as a central point of service access for government departments and hosting, reporting and analysis applications.

it is bangalore after all. the sillicon valley of india, it will have so huge requirement. a data center is required in a state where there is s many digital data, so many conputerized...
