Is cloud the next big thing? - CIOL News Reports

MUMBAI, INDIA: As Cloud computing will become the next big thing; businesses are closely evaluating its overall impact and comparing benefits with outsourcing services.

According to UST Global’s chief marketing officer Stephanie Moore, cloud computing has slightly more benefits than outsourcing services. “It saves cost, it is better than outsourcing and also can improve the time to market. Even the IT people can engage and participate in the business,” she said.

“Businesses can look at non-differentiating or non-core activities which can be fully outsourced to qualified third-party experts. It opens up new source of revenues and opportunities for the service providers of cloud computing,” Moore added.

From cloud service provider stand point, she explained that there are areas of managed services, service aggregations or aggregators, integrated support customization, which has ample opportunities for both as user or service provider.

Stressing about the cloud, CA Inc’s senior vice president William Bauman said, “I am a believer in cloud and IT has undergone a fundamental shift for all IT consumers, vendors and developers. And this shift is in the way how people access technology and which moved from mainframes to distributed, and from Internet to cloud now.”

He explained that cloud promises ease of use, scalability, limitation into upfront investments or cost and pay for what you use. However, Bauman pointed out the cloud can be classified into three areas SaaS – private cloud, PaaS – public cloud and IaaS – hybrid cloud and that primarily the Internet is enabler of cloud services.

According to Bauman, cloud is limit-less whether it is services, storage, applications or usage. He added that in terms of cloud benefits businesses can add agility, reduced cost, flexibility to IT and improve processes. However, he agreed that the security concerns such as data loss, loss of control over data, privacy while using cloud remains the key barrier in adoption of cloud.

Though cloud offers various benefits there are debates as to the definition of cloud. According to Gartner India’s vice president and principal analyst Partha Iyengar, cloud computing is defined as a style of computing where scalable and elastic IT related capabilities are provided as a service to external customers using Internet technologies.

On the cloud services and opportunities, Iyengar said there are about two kinds of opportunities – Cloud Service Intermediation and Cloud Service Aggregation. “From India perspective, outsourcing services companies need to look at both kind of opportunities as the spectrum of potential on cloud platform and services is very wide,” he pointed.

Sharing the service provider view Accenture’s managing director James Harris said that the key area in cloud service is how you can drive business benefits using style of computing. “How you can have services across the spectrum – infrastructure, software applications, processes – at lower cost,” he said.

According to Harris, cloud computing is still emerging with new opportunities for both user and service provider and so one should stop thinking about cloud computing and start implementing it.
