Intel Capital to invest $17-mn in Indian firms

The investment firm is interested in investing in firms developing applications for PCs and mobile phones

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Intel Capital today announced that it will invest $17 million in three India-based firms: Yatra.com, an online travel portal, Buzzindiatown.com, a social networking network and Emnet Samsara Media, an advertising company.

The investment firm however, refused to reveal the break-up of its investment in each of these firms.

Earlier in 2005, Intel had announced an investment to the tune of $250 million in India. According to Arvind Sodhani, Intel Capital has till now, invested in more than 50 Indian companies. "Of the total $250 million we have invested around half of the funds."

Meanwhile, in an apparent bid to tap the emerging markets, Intel Capital is set to invest in Indian technology firms that develop application for PCs and mobile phones.

It is also interested in investing in companies developing WiMax applications. Besides India, Intel Capital has plans to invest in China, Brazil and Mexico.

Intel's investment arm wants the Indian government to auction WiMax (World Interoperability for Microwave Access) spectrum. Intel Capital believes WiMax ready mobile phones would drive the next phase of growth in the country.

According to Sudheer Kumar Kuppam, managing director – India, Japan, ANZ and South-East Asia, WiMax would be the next level of connectivity across the country.
