A well attended four day GIS AND INTEROPERABILITY DEFENCE ASIA 2008 Conference was held at Raffles Convention Centre Singapore from 15th to 18th September where the progress made by India and Pakistan in Interoperability and NCW was discussed as Soft Ware and GIS companies have been providing programmes to the Armed Forces, Intelligence Agencies like MI, ARC , NTRO and such, for data bases and GIS which is the base for NCW. Google and Microsoft Virtual Earth complained India had objected to latest maps being put up so we Indians see old 2002 Maps and we are the losers. Pakistan sent 5 delegates to the Conference as US Navy has provided CENTRIX -M software and hardware to PN when PN Admirals commanded and took part in TF 150 and NATO gave Pakistan Army help for GIS for the earth quake relief. Hence NCW which has still not been defined but is a combination of INEROPERABILTY and KILL CHAIN TIME REDUCTION with DECISION ASSIST was discussed. Indian Navy uses home made solutions in Linux open standards and Army and Air Force have different standards and common protocols will have to be worked and should form part of this important Indian Navy Conference, as all three services are unclear on SPACE Command or its common uses and may have duplication. This is critical at this stage to avoid what Indian Armed Forces lack coordination, as there is no CDS to direct them firmly but a Nam Ke Waste IDS. Cmde retd Ranjit B Rai
