IT adoption key cause for data explosion: study

With enormous data explosion, NetApp backs virtualization for its data storage solution

MUMBAI,INDIA: NetApp, the enterprise storage provider, has announced the interim findings of its ongoing survey with Nielsen Research on ‘Data Explosion in India – Trends and Challenges’.

Under the study, IT managers from various large and medium enterprises across business verticals based in Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune have been quizzed. The study is divided into three parts, Leading sources of data growth, Data access and security challenges, and Storage challenges by continuous data traffic.

According the study, 43 per cent IT applications, i.e., ERP, CRM, etc and 19 per cent emails/attachments were the main sources of data growth in enterprises. While, 31 per cent of 24x7 data access and 15 per cent data proliferation were the key business challenges with the data growth as per the respondents.

In terms of vertical and data explosion, BFSI comprised 53 per cent data growth followed by Manufacturing with 48 per cent data. For the data access and security challenges, the 31 per cent respondents considered maintaining 24x7 data access as top challenge, followed by 16 per cent data security and 15 per cent data proliferation.

“While the survey indicates how IT applications are key factor in data growth in the organizations, and which will rise further in future with applications, emails/ attachments and data duplication. This also adds the cost of data maintenance, security and technical refresh annually,” Surajit Sen, director- Channels, Alliances and Markets, NetApp India.

“However to manage the data growth problem, NetApp has launched SnapManager for Virtual Infrastructure (SMVI) – a storage virtualization solution. It integrates the hardware and software applications of enterprises and empowers data management. SMVI is supported with VMware, Hyper-V and Citrix,” added Sen.

The solution is based on virtualization technology that stops proliferation of servers. It benefits in reducing power consumption for cooling, less storage space, lowers manageability cost, less expense on maintenance and hardware refresh.

These results in improved energy efficiency and better data storage for enterprises.

“Our solution is deployed by large enterprises in BFSI and Telecom sector in India. With virtualization being the biggest trend in enterprises, this solution can be used across all industry verticals such as banking, finance, IteS, manufacturing and telecom,” Sen concluded.
