IBM hosts technology day at IIT Delhi

NEW DELHI,INDIA: IBM, one of the leading IT service providers, today hosted IBM Technology Day at The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi).

The focus of the event was on trends in green computing and nanotechnology, besides system engineering and power-aware computer architecture. This is the fourth in the series of IBM Technology Days being organized at all IIT campuses.

It aims to encourage students to pursue a broad range of careers in research, business and technology, said a press release.

Dr. Ponani Gopalakrishnan, vice president, India Software Lab, IBM India, said, "IBM is continuously investing in preparing next generation of leaders in the information technology industry and in enabling India dedicate itself to innovation and leadership in the 21st century."

The statement mentioned that through the event the company would uncover new sources of talent by encouraging them to take challenges and think differently to generate new innovative ideas.

The highlight of the day at IIT Delhi was discussion on nanotechnology and Green Computing, innovative developments that IBM India STG Lab is working on.

He added that the Green-IT is the need of the day, with new innovations such as virtualized data centers, cloud computing and server consolidation to reduce carbon footprint.

" IBM will double the compute capacity of our Green Data Centers by 2010 — without increasing power consumption, thus avoiding 5 billion kilowatt hours per year and CO2 emissions equivalent to taking 1M cars off the road," Gopalakrishnan added.

Prof Sandeep Sen, dean and head of the department, Computer Science, IIT Delhi, said "Innovation has been playing a significant role in driving the market trends today. We at IIT Delhi are in the continuing mode to equip the student talent pool with the global technology trends for a competitive scenario."

"The institute provides a stimulating environment for generation of ideas, concepts and technological innovations and has active collaborations with a number of corporate research labs and other well-known universities, "he added.
