HP to power 'knowledge society' in India

Aims at networking libraries through DSpace Open source platform

NEW DELHI, INDIA: HP will power the 'knowledge society' in India by networking libraries in the country through its DSpace Open Source platform.

"India has a lot of knowledge and what it needs now is to have digital repositories, which make it easier for storing, managing, and accessing information. HP sees the knowledge area as perfect-fit for its DSpace Open Source platform," Nick Wainwright, director of Content and Media program at HP laboratories told CyberMedia News.

Wainwright said that DSpace has applications across a wide spectrum of areas, which not only includes libraries, but also anthropology departments, museums, archaeological departments, research centers across various disciplines are users of D Space.

"Using DSpace, information is being digitized which enables are a wider reach and also preserves the content. In light of the technology led change, libraries are being digitized which enable the creation, organization, maintenance, management, access to sharing and preservation of digital document collections. Digital libraries are being created for diverse communities and in different fields such as education, science, health, culture and so on. To build a digital library under economical conditions, open source software is preferable. Open access of knowledge is possible only if repositories are made online," he informed.

Michel Benard, director of Technology Programs at HP University Relations informed that HP University relations collaborate with worldwide research community to create unprecedented technology innovations.

"More than 260 DSpace installations with about 968000 documents have been done globally. In India leading institutions like ICFAI, Delhi College of Engineering, and Raman Research Institute have DSpace installations," he informed.

Bernard said that in India, HP will be looking at integrating the information of both the academia and research institutions through a capacity-building process.

"The HP DSpace foundation funds the initiatives at a global level and we are exploring ways to do it in India too. We want to continuously improve on the platform by allowing users to access and take their feedback and evolve the product based on the inputs," he added.

HP invests approximately $4 million a year in alliance projects and infrastructure, globally. HP along with Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently formed the DSpace foundation. HP University Relations in India has initiated steps towards bringing the policy makers and user community for DSpace in India.
