Flavour of the month: The other side of Bill Gates

His professional life and his penchant to augment his business are legendary. But Bill Gates, like many of us, has nourished hobbies and passions that took him out of the boardroom table

It is no surprise that Gates ventured into his passion for computers and succeeded to dizzying heights but it all started as a hobby. He still prefers to have spray cheese and Cherry Coke to fulfill his culinary desires but his hobbies have moved beyond the small screen to Golf, bridge, reading, working for charitable causes or even strutting in his guitar.

For starters, Gates ensures that his desire to play bridge is met up by entering into games over the Internet and takes part in tournaments by logging on in the name of 'Chalengr'. And it would not surprise anyone that he would settle for nothing less than a win in any game he takes part.

Over the years, there have been a few privileged to have interacted with Gates over the last few decades and lesser souls who have had the chance to view him indulging in his hobbies. But that changed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas this year, when Gates tried strumming the guitar.

During that very show, Gates proudly flashed a twenty-dollar note, which he had won from Robbie Bach (President, Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division) during the "Guitar Hero" duel, which also had guitarist Saul Hudson (better known as slash).

His hobbies took centre stage when it was widely reported that Gates's last day in the Microsoft office was coming closer.

Many could question Gates's ability of playing the game fair but none can question his audacity to take bold decisions and his tenacity to even probably compete with a certain Tiger Woods for a game of Golf or Bono in a guitar jam session!

With him concentrating on life after logging out from Microsoft, none of us would be surprised if he goes on to make a fortune by indulging in any of his passions with the same passion that has seen him don the role of software scion for decades now.
