Facebook reaches 200 million user mark

NEW YORK, USA: Facebook, the modern identity of social networking in today's networked world, crossed a historic milestone on Wednesday when its user base officially hit 200 million.

In eight months, this ubiquitous online hangout signed 100 million people from around the world, to cross this milestone.

“When we built Facebook in 2004, our goal was to create a richer, faster way for people to share information about what was happening around them,” said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook while announcing this achievement.

“We thought that giving people better tools to communicate would help them better understand the world, which would then give them even greater power to change the world.”

In order to celebrate, 200 million mark, Facebook has created a space on the site, 'Facebook for Good', where people can share their stories about how Facebook has helped them give back to their communities, effect change or connect with a distant relative.

Recently it had also joined with 16 charitable and advocacy organizations including UNHCR, to develop a fund-raising initiative that allows users to buy virtual 'charity gifts' for the organizations involved.

Mark Zuckerberg said creating channels between people who want to work together towards change has always been one of the ways that social movements push the world forward and make it better.

Both U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Nicholas Sarkozy have used Facebook as a way to organize their supporters, he reminded.

“There are still many more people and groups in the world whose voices we want to connect with everyone who wants to hear them. So even as we celebrate the 200 millionth person and all of you using Facebook today, we are working to bring the power of sharing to everyone in the world,” he added.

According to a recent statistics from Facebook, more than half of its users log in to the site at least once a day.

However, there were many thorns on Facebook's paths of expansion, including privacy concerns. Also the redesign that it had undergone recently was not very well received by the users.

The company had also announced last week that it is replacing its chief financial officer and seeking a replacement with "public company experience”.

But none of these has affected the popularity of the site. Its population is now higher than that of Brazil and Japan!

If Facebook users had a common language to speak, probably it would have become the sixth most-spoken language on Earth, mind it!

Interestingly, Facebook had recently said that more and more people over 35 years are joining the social networking site. Do you think Facebook has become a virtual platform to get rid of the midlife crisis?
