Facebook embraces Indian languages

BANGALORE, INDIA: Have you ever thought of connecting with your peers on social network sites in your own language? If you speak Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil or Malayalam, now you can use social networking site Facebook in any of these languages to connect with your people.

Facebook launched the service on Thursday. “Do you speak Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil or Malayalam? Now you can use Facebook in any of these languages to connect with your Indian friends all over the world,” says the Facebook page that welcomes the Indian users.

The latest sensation in social networking, Facebook had recently announced that its user base has crossed 200 million. By offering services in Indian languages, it expects to increase the user base further. According to the last census there are around 770 million speakers who speak in the six Indian languages that Facebook is offering its service.

When Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg made a pleasure trip to India in May 2008, there were rumors that he was looking at some bigger possibilities in India, and that a Facebook India launch was inevitable. And now the speculation has become right. Moreover, according to reports, Facebook is reporting a speedy growth ion Asia and Africa.

However, considering the psyche of the tech-savvy Indian youth, it seems English would be their preferred language. Do you think embracing Indian languages would help Facebook increase its popularity in the country?
