BANGALORE, INDIA: Social networking site Facebook has opened up knob on the system that lets users browse others sites via networking portal.

The feature named 'Connect' was first announced in May 2008, and it allows the Facebook members use their login credentials to access other websites.

The system also gives feedback about what a Facebooker's friends have been doing on those partner sites. According to the media reports, the site would provide path to its members were they could visit and collect information from different site by just using their login information.

MySpace, Yahoo and Google have announced similar programs this year, using common standards that would allow other web sites to reduce the work needed to embrace each identity system.

Facebook said it would vet all those sites that wanted to sign up to 'Connect' and would review the usage of data gathered about members. In the next few weeks, a number of prominent Web sites would weave this service into their pages, including those of the Discovery Channel, the social news site Digg, the genealogy network Geni and the online video hub Hulu.

Some of the supporters of Facebook Connect said that such program would help in the creation of new social web, because chatter among friends would infiltrate even sites that have been entirely unsociable thus far.

"Everyone is looking for ways to make their Web sites more social," said Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer. "They can build their own social capabilities, but what will be more useful for them is building on top of a social system that people are already wedded to, " she added.
