A team of researchers from Korea has developed a new material for graphite anodes to recharge the lithium batteries

WASHINGTON, USA: A cell phone or laptop with extra battery back up is just on the way. The researchers in Korea have developed a new material for graphite anodes, which they claim could give the rechargeable Lithium ion batteries a power boost.

As per the media reports a team at the new technology would allow the batteries in notebooks or cell phone to last eight times longer than conventional batteries.

The Hanyang University in Korea has developed the material that involves three-dimensional, highly porous silicon structures, the latest edition of Angewandte Chemie journal reported.

According to the researchers, a Lithium ion battery contains a cathode (positive electrode) made of a mixed metal oxide, such as lithium cobalt oxide, and an anode (negative electrode) made of graphite.

As the battery is being charged, lithium ions migrate into the anode, where they are stored between the graphite layers and as the battery is being discharged, these ions migrate back to the cathode.

The team led by Jaephil Cho developed a new method for the production of a porous silicon anode.
The researchers claimed that the lithium ions are rapidly transported and stored helps in making rapid charging and discharging.
