OnTrac finds the Indian mindset, “want to learn, but don’t want to be taught”, challenging

BANGALORE, INDIA: Attrition rates are likely to come down due to economic slowdown, according to Ravi Venkatesam, chief executive officer of the city-based OnTrac, an operations and management training firm.

"The quantum of jobs is coming down," he said on the sidelines of the recently-concluded Nasscom BPO Strategy Summit 2008 in Bangalore.

Venkatesam said the business process outsourcing firms would be facing a slowdown owing to the much talked about recession in the US.

He, however, is optimistic that the business will go up once the slowdown is over. He felt that post-slowdown, business across the world would be outsourcing in a much higher way, similar to what had happened after the dotcom bust.

"I'd say recession forces companies to re-look at things," he said, adding that India stands to gain from the boom that would follow the slowdown.

His firm is undertaking a programme called 'Business English.'

"The goal is to make people comfortable with using business English."

The firm also imparts pre-selection training to equip new recruits meet the requirements of the companies.

OnTrac's 'Xcelerate' programme would delay frontline staff from quitting an organization, Venkatesam claimed.

"Frontline staff is the most precious asset of any organization and are more productive. But, they are more likely to leave (a company)," he said.

Besides India, OnTrac trains team leads and operating managers in four other Asian countries: China, Philippines, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

"Indians want to learn, but don't want to be taught, while in other countries they want to learn and are open to be taught," Venkatesam replied to a specific question on the mindset of Indian managers vis-à-vis those in other countries.

Due to this mindset, "the India market is more challenging and need innovative methods," he added.

OnTrac is now planning to set up offices in multiple cities in India and is welcoming partners overseas.

Venkatesam further claimed that 17-18 per cent of Indian team leaders are OnTrac-trained. The training, while enhancing productivity, quality and customer satisfaction, will check attrition and absenteeism.

The firm also provides post-training support and monitors the progress. It has recently entered into a partnership with People Dynamics in Malaysia.
