EMC sets eye on UID project - CIOL News Reports

NEW DELHI, INDIA: EMC India, a leading player in network storage market, has expressed interest to be part of the ambitious Unique ID project initiated by the Government of India.

“The number of people that has to be supported by UID project is significantly high. We have the right kind of technology and infrastructure in place to support the scale that UID project may need,” said Manoj Chugh, President, EMC India and SAARC, EMC Corporation, at a press conference here today.

EMC is one of the partners in many of e-governance project being run by the Government of India and state governments, and expects this involvement is an advantage for the company to present its business case for other government projects, especially UID.

“We are already a partner to Employees’ State Insurance Corporation, which is estimated to have the largest medical service records in the country. We are partner to e-Seva project for passport and will require to manage huge database. Similarly we are interested to be part of the UID project as well,” said Chugh.

However, Chugh said that the company has not communicated with UID Authority, but will approach it through its partners and if required maybe directly.

On the readiness of the infrastructure for supporting UID project, Chugh said that he could only comment on it once the company gets to know the complete model that UIDAI is planning to implement.

“India is among the top three market for us. In the last September, we already committed investment of $2 billion for India, and no other company in our segment has ever committed such a massive investment in India. Providing infrastructure and support is not an issue for us but we can be specific once we get to know the requirement of UIDAI,” said Chugh.

EMC in India has close to 1300 customers. It expects that government projects will be a major driver of growth for the company. EMC has hinted that it may acquire some technology company in the year to come but refrained from divulging details of planned acquisitions.

“I cannot disclose the plans of acquisition but only take you to the point where we have been investing. We have made acquisition in information security and data management segment,” said Steven Leonard, President, EMC Asia Pacific and Japan, EMC Corporation.

Leonard refused to clarify whether the acquisition that the company is planning will be in the same segments. Since 2003, EMC Corporation claims to have invested $9 billion in acquisition of 40 companies including RSA security and VMWare.
