PARIS, FRANCE: The French Government admitted on Sunday that a gang of cyber swindlers got access to the personal account of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and took some 'small amount' from his account recently.

Though the incident happened in September, and the President had filed a complaint to the police, the authorities had not admitted the cyber theft so far, said a newspaper report.

The French Government is investigating the case. This latest episode has made the French authorities to think of the effectiveness of the safety measures in Internet banking as well as the Internet at large, when it comes to the storage of personal details.

This is not for the first time that VIPs have been falling victims to cyber crimes, especially hacking. It was only recently that the personal email of US vice president candidate Sarah Palin's personal email was hacked by a student.

Though the French authorities have started investigation no clue has been received so far to track down the thieves who had managed to hack into Sarkozy's bank account and siphon off undisclosed amount of cash.

"The swindlers will be punished," Luc Chatel, secretary of state for consumer affairs, told French radio. He admitted that more work have to be done in France to tighten the Internet banking security in the country. According to the national crime agency, France has seen a 9 per cent rise in cyber crimes this year.
