Convergys brings e-learning on mobile

Mobile-learning will be the next requirement and the future needs technologies to meet this demand

HYDERABAD, INDIA: Experts have realized the potential of blending e-learning with mobile platform.

Convergys Corp has developed simulation-based e-learning for Palm Digital Assistants (PDAs).

Subhasish Karmakar, manager design, Creative Services of the firm, said: “Our technologies can be converted to the mobile platform on-demand and made scalable. A client for whom we have developed e-learning solutions via PDA is one of the world's leading, multinational technology companies.”

Convergys, however, did not divulge the name of the client.

Corporates need learning solutions to be delivered via PDA for their employees who are on the move.

“It's not sector demand, but rather job functions that drive the client need for learning solutions to be delivered via PDA. However, it is more relevant for sectors such as retail, pharma and BFSI,” said Maheedharan Thiagarajan, director, Global Learning Operations, Convergys Corp.

Despite low adoption of e-learning by Indian corporates, global acquisitions are likely to spur the growth of e-learning in the country.

Convergys, an e-learning solutions provider, has 150 employees based in Hyderabad and Bangalore. The e-learning content, including those to be made available on the mobile, will be developed in India.

Still emerging

Even as the firm is customizing these learning solutions, not all the applications would be available on the mobile.

“Designing and developing content for PDA has some guidelines. As part of our consultation process, we educate our clients on what is possible and what is not. What looked impossible one year ago is possible today, so the key is to keep pace with the change,” said Thiagarajan.

Content development for mobile-learning is still in a nascent stage and needs more research, an area the company will focus on.

The other trend that is gaining momentum is simulation-based training, which enhances learning through gaming-based real life environment.

The next generation of simulation-based training is essentially designed for those who have grown up with computers, gaming and the Internet.

From teaching simple application usage, these simulations create real-life work situation for employees.

“By deploying learning solutions in various functions, the error factor, whether in customer handling or business decisions, reduces drastically,” explained Thiagarajan. Convergys has clients such as AT&T, Avaya, GlaxoSmithKline, Hilton Hotels, Microsoft and Morgan Stanley for its learning solutions.
