C-DoT now at 25 redefines its roadmap

NEW DELHI, INDIA: The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), the country’s premier telecommunications research and development centre, which turned 25 today, realigned its efforts and defined its roadmap with a focus in four major directions.

“We will now focus on projects of national and strategic importance, central monitoring system for security, Max NG, a project for North East, next generation technologies and simultaneously work on futuristic technology like one number and advance optic fibres,” said PV Acharya, executive director, C-DoT.

Among the major new project will be central monitoring system which will be deployed across network and will be accessible by approved nodal agency for monitoring of network for security purpose.

“We have proof-of-concept for this monitoring system and are waiting for government approval to scale up this project. This will be different from normal phone tapping. It is being built on advance software technology with inputs from a wide range of stakeholders. At one side it will make telecom network safe and on the other side it will give more privacy to genuine subscribers across the network,” said Acharya.

“We have been chosen as nodal agency for implementation of central monitoring system since we have been working with security agencies and government for long time,” he added.

After government approval C-DoT will scale-up CMS network and implement up to national level across all operators. However, it will not monitor calls being made through satellite phones. It will only monitor calls being made in the normal network.

C-DOT will work on project for rural development through the shared GSM radio Access Network, which is currently under development and expected to give a business sense to operators for their entry in to rural India.

C-DOT has also undertaken futuristic study projects like One Number, which aim to unitize a unique number like social security number, for a mobile personal number, cognitive radio and advanced optical network technology.

Present at the occasion, Gurudas Kamat, Union Minister of state for communication, applauded C-DOT’s effort and assured C-DOT for governments support in its upcoming endeavors.

“I would like to thank Rajiv Gandhi who had a vision to see the role of telecommunication in developing Indian economy. While we expect telecom market to grow, but at the same time we are serious to prevent misuse of our network,” Kamat said.

“In this respect, soon C-DoT will play an important role at national level in monitoring traffic within Indian telecom network through its CMS. Projects like shared radio of GSM network which permit active sharing of infrastructure will make sense for telecom business in rural India.

The minister said soon rural India will be connected with IP enabled services.

“Rural India that heard dial tone from MAX and RAX switches will now hear click of mouse from C-DOT’s NG RAN and SG RAN,” said Kamat.

Sam Pitroda founder member of C-DoT and Chairman of Knowledge Commission, recalled his journey at the occasion and the immense political support that he got from Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in setting up of C-DoT.

Pitroda put forward an unfinished agenda for C-DOT of concentrating and connecting bottomline.

“Telecom has created wealth for only a few. There is unfinished agenda which is a bigger issue. We have to take of bottomline,” he said.

“We have to deliver services like health care, education, agriculture using technology to people at the bottom of the pyramids. There is need to develop application and in local languages. People take pride in building industry but I look for India as an example of building great society, ” said Pitroda.
