Bharti network most congested, says TRAI

The quarterly report of the telecom regulator says there is improvement in operators' performance

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Bharti Airtel, one of India's leading telecom service providers, has the most congested cellular network during October-December 2008, followed by Vodafone, a TRAI report said on Monday.

The regulator evaluates the congestion levels at the points of interconnection (PoI), which are places where mobile traffic is exchanged between the networks of different operators.

Bharti Airtel had 14 PoIs with congestion during the period, while Vodafone was the second most congested network with 12 PoIs, TRAI said. Reliance Communications and Idea had 11 each, while Dishnet Wireless had eight. TRAI also said Tata Teleservices had the least congested network with two PoIs.

TRAI monitors the level of congestion at the PoIs among various service providers on a monthly basis.

According to TRAI benchmarks, out of 200 calls between two operators, only one call should face a congestion problem.

Though the current level is much higher than the 0.5 per cent congestion level as stipulated by TRAI, there is considerable improvement in the operators' performance. In October 2008, Airtel had 42 POIs, while Vodafone had 23 in October 2008.
