The service being provided is not on the GSM open network (techonology) free spectrum where governments hav a say in the allocation and regulation but is instead used by a propreitay techonology patented by a US company Qualcomm (CDMA). The currennt 3G spectrum auctions are being held for the GSM 3G (IMT-2000)and not CDMA 2x (EV-DO) . Any operator with a CDMA network may upgarde to CDMA 2x without government hassles any only need to pay the required royalties to qualcomm.

I do not agree with what this says about BSNL not agreeing about its 3G or not. If someone has got the device, have a look at the box, it says "Lets 3G" Which is actually a BSNL made sticker, pasted on it. I dont think BSNL has not pasted this without knowing this thing is 3G. Since they have pasted it, they are aware of it. Though, I agree with the second face of this article about pre release of this service.

I also agree with Prasanto. It is nice that BSNL is trying to fare well in an ever-increasing competitive Indian telecom market. In fact, the state-run PSU should have been the number one long before, considering its vast network of optical fiber network that reaches the length and breadth of the country. But despite this competitive advantage, it has not been able to beat private players thanks to bureaucratic bungling, red-tapism etc etc that are typical of a PSU. And there were idiots like Mahajan who was willing to dish out the whole infrastructure of the BSNL to pvt players after taking money from the likes of Reliance. BSNL should be given a free hand. Professionals should be appointed at the top. Autonomy is needed. Today the situation is that it needs to get signal from the top for doing everything. For instance, for laying a cable, it needs to obtain approval from several higher-ups. Umpteen number of formalities are there, and in the process of development gets delayed, and private players race ahead. Whereas, a private player, say Reliance, doesnt need any approval or nod. In a similar scenario of cable laying it will just go ahead with its project by hook or crook, be it by paying money to the local authorities or whatever. When BSNL reached optimum utilisation of its capacity in Kerala, Idea raced ahead and became the number one. This happened because of the delay in procuring equipment, thanks to all those delays caused by tender, Nortel, court cases, etc. Give BSNL autonomy and bring in professionalism.
