BSNL mulls over BlackBerry services in India

Once security issues surrounding it are sorted out

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is exploring the options of launching BlackBerry services in India once the government sorts out the security issues.

BSNL CMD Kuldeep Goyal said that the state-run telecom major is in talks with Blackberry to offer the services to the BSNL subscribers.

BlackBerry service was introduced in India in October 2004 by Canada-based wireless communications company Research In Motion (RIM).

It allows users to send and receive email with the help of a handheld device and supports MP3 player, multimedia, video and digital camera.

Security agencies sounded alarm over the BlackBerry service in India as the data transmitted cannot be tracked as it is routed through servers in Canada.

Authorities want BlackBerry maker RIM to give them access to algorithms needed to decrypt messages or shift the server from Canada to India.

Reliance, Airtel and Vodafone currently offer BlackBerry services in India.
