BSNL extends contract with UTStarcom

ALAMEDA, USA: UTStarcom, Inc., a provider in IP based network, announced today that its contract with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), India's state-owned broadband and telecom services company, was extended to support newly-planned expansions of BSNL’s multiplay network.

In the first phase, UTStarcom deployed 1.3 million broadband subscriber lines for BSNL with an additional 1.1 million broadband subscriber lines during the second phase, said a press release.

With the new expansion phase, UTStarcom would deploy its B1000 multi-service access node (MSAN) solution throughout India to add approximately 475,000 ports of capacity to BSNL’s existing broadband network, allowing additional subscribers to experience triple-play services.

Subscribers with local loop access would be able to reach Internet speeds up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps). UTStarcom remains India’s leading provider of Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) and broadband infrastructure in terms of commercially-deployed and active subscriber lines, the release added.

“We worked closely with BSNL to successfully complete phase-I of this multiplay broadband network and are now nearing completion of phase-II,” said Vijay Yadav, vice president and managing director of UTStarcom's South Asia operations.

He added that by choosing UTStarcom for the expansion of its multiplay services network, BSNL understands its commitment to extending India’s broadband capabilities to all regions of the country. They are confident that the expansion would help BSNL increase market share while offering engaging, innovative services to end-users.

As BSNL’s turnkey provider of multiplay network technology, UTStarcom would maintain full responsibility for design, planning, deployment, service roll out and maintenance of the network, the release added.
