NEW DELHI, INDIA: State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) plans to launch CDMA services by the mid of 2008.

A senior official source in BSNL confirmed that the review committee has submitted its recommendations to the CMD, for offering CDMA services. "A committee has been formed to study the feasibility and growth for entering in to the CDMA space. The committee has submitted the report to Kuldeep Goyal, CMD of BSNL."

The source also informed that the committee has recommended inviting tenders by the end of this fiscal. However, he did not reveal BSNL's investment plan for CDMA operations.

For its CDMA network, the operator plans to set up 10,000 wireless towers within a year once the final decision for launching the CDMA service is announced. BSNL already provides fixed wireless and limited mobility service on CDMA platform under the name 'Tarang' in some of the existing circles.

After the Department of Telecom (DoT) permitted telecom operators to offer dual technology on the single license in October 2007, CDMA operators started seeking GSM spectrum to offer spectrum.

However, two PSUs, BSNL and MTNL were among the existing GSM operators seeking to offer CDMA service in the country. MTNL is also planning to offer CDMA services and is seeking CDMA spectrum.
