iMac defects: Apple giving 15 p.c refunds

NEW YORK, USA: It was widely reported that many 27-inch iMac have been shipped with defective displays.

Though the media did not go all out at it with immediate follow-ups, now the matter is reappearing with reports that Apple is giving refunds to customers. Recently the company had reportedly paid out 15 per cent of the iMac's price to its customers in the UK who complained of defects in the PC.

Gizmodo.com now reports that Apple is refunding the same amount to some of it US customers too.

As the iMac's is prized at $2000, the refund amount is about $300.

Citing an Apple customer support discussion with one of its readers, Gizmodo said that the 15 per cent bonus refund was officially for 'tax and shipping' it's a flat base rate to cover the customer's return no matter the area he or she is in. So if you have an 8 per cent sales tax, you may only be pocketing 7 per cent (and even less after shipping if you don't have an Apple Store near).

Meanwhile, the machine in question was in short supply. Apple attributed the dearth in iMac supply to popularity of the PC not the defective displays, according to MAC.BLORGE.com.

The 27-inch iMac has had some significant problems with with its displays, namely a problem with screen flickering and another with a yellowish cast to displays. However, Apple has apparently solved the flickering problem completely with a second update for the 27-inch systems.

TheRegister reported that almost all of the users that have applied the patch are no longer seeing the problems, with very few exceptions. So it seems like the problem has been solved, with the second update of iMac.
