REDMOND, USA: Microsoft had extended the worldwide availability of Windows XP Home for ultra-low-cost personal computers (ULCPCs) until the later of June 30, 2010, or one year after general availability of the next version of Windows, said a top executive of the firm.

"We are extending direct OEM sales of Windows XP Home for ULCPCs so that they can preinstall Windows on these devices through the later of June 30, 2010 or one year after the general availability of the next version of the Windows operating system," said Michael Dix, general manager of Windows Client Product Management.

The original plan for Microsoft was to stop shipping new copies of Windows XP to hardware vendors on January 31, 2008. The Redmond-based firm later extended the date to June 30, 2008 following many PC makers demanded Microsoft to keep XP around for ULCPCs.

"While Windows Vista provides many benefits, including an easier and more secure user experience, Windows XP Home provides an effective solution on these devices from a performance and cost perspective," stated Dix.

He, however, added that Microsoft would not extend sales of other editions of Windows XP beyond June 30, 2008.
