Happy birthday dear Internet - CIOL News Reports

SAN FRANCISCO, USA: Leonard Kleinrock and team at the University of California, who gave created the revolution called to Internet 40 years ago, are arranging a birthday party for Internet today to mark the 40th anniversary of the first message sent on October 29, 1969.

Kleinrock is now wondering with amazement how successful is Internet today, with constant addition of new applications like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and others.

"It's a teenager now. It's learned some things but it has a long way to go. It's behaving erratically, but it's given enormous gratification to its parents and the community," he was quoted as saying by AFP.

Internet was born on September 2, 1969, when two computers at the University of California, Los Angeles, exchanged some data. (Remember, last month too there were some birthday celebrations around. Yes, there is nothing wrong in having many birthdays!)

The exchange was part of the first test of Arpanet, an experimental network for the U.S. Department of Defense. And that exchange of the meaningless data was the beginning of a revolution called Internet that changed the way the world communicated breaking the geographical boundaries.

A few weeks later, on October 29, a connection was established between two sites - the UCLA and the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, California. The effort was led by Kleinrock and his team.

It was in 1983 that a domain name system was proposed, offering '.com' and '.gov', with '.edu' following years later.

However, the real explosion in the world of Internet happened in the 1990s, when a British physicist named Tim Berners-Lee introduced the idea of the Web, a way of using the Internet that would allow people to more easily connect and exchange resources across broad expanses.

And today, Internet is able to make and break the world. World companies with billions of turnover are harnessing Internet to increase their businesses. Tons of information is being transmitted to a massive Internet savvy audience across the world today.
