China shuts 16000 more porn sites

BANGALORE, INDIA: As part of its ongoing demolition drive against the websites that promotes pornographic content, China has reportedly shut down 16,000 more web sites as of Wednesday.

Citing statistics from the International Communication Office of the CPC Central Committee, Xinhua has reported that since the crackdown was launched in last December, more than 850,000 pictures and 1.3 million messages with lewd or pornographic content were deleted.

Also, more than 30 online novels and 15 mobile phone games were halted, it added.

The banned works either included pornographic content, used provocative or privacy-violating titles to draw attention, or blatantly talked about one-night stands, wife swapping, sex abuses, and violence that disregarded common decency, a report in The Economic Times said citing General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) of China.

China launched a new round of crackdown on spread of pornographic contents through Internet or mobile WAP On December 8, which saw Chinese police detaining some 4000 people as part of the crackdown. The Chinese government had earlier announced that the latest campaign against pornography on the Internet and through mobile WAP sites will continue through May next year.

In August, China formally backed down on a plan to pre-install Internet filter software on all new computers sold in the country after an international and domestic outcry.

But still the government maintains tight controls over the Internet, saying it has to do so to protect young people from bad influences.

But the crackdown doesn't come cheap. Since China issued measures on rewarding tip-offs on porn web sites in last December, a total of 476 whistlers had been rewarded 395,000 yuan, says ET.
