Newspapers will make money online: Google CEO

WASHINGTON, USA: Boosting confidence of newspaper publishers in the potentials the online industry offers, Google Inc. Chief Executive Eric Schmidt, who have been accused of draining readers and advertising from newspapers' Web sites, told a group of editors on Sunday that newspapers would find new ways to make money online by harnessing the vast reach of the Internet.

“Google recognizes that newspapers are vital to democracy and provide a critical source of online content. We understand how fundamental your mission is," the CEO was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

Though Schmidt hoped that the news business would find a new model based on a combination of advertising and subscription revenue, and said Google hopes to facilitate that, he did not offer any specifics, AP said. Schmidt, however, encouraged his audience to experiment with everything from social media to personalized content to engage readers.

Recently there was long heated debates on whether newspapers should start charging their online readers. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has been fiercely arguing for charging for online content as he addressed concerns among newspaper publishers that search engines like Google Inc and Yahoo Inc help users to find stories by aggregating links to newspapers websites and blogs - but then wrest ad dollars from them that they think should be theirs.

However, there were reports that Murdoch businesses like UK satellite broadcaster BSkyB could quite easily charge a little extra to bundle online news with the TV and broadband packages it sells, having both premium content and a payment mechanism already in place.

Others starting from a weaker position, such as Britain's Independent - whose websites are essentially a copy of the printed paper spiced up with video bought from agencies - would suffer a loss of readers if they merely erected a paywall, the reports had suggested.
