It’s indeed an interesting announcement by the NSN CEO of his restructuring plan to axe 17,000 jobs and even more disturbing where the cuts will be. I believe the CEO has been on the job for at the past least two years and the plan under his watch was to ensure a sustainable profitable operation. I wonder how this restructuring plan is any different from the past two years to ensure a sustainable profitable operation moving forward based on customer solutioning rather than the selling of products. I’m sure this announcement has caused consternation not only amongst the Finnish and German labour unions but NSN employees worldwide. This begs the questions from the CEO on the critical restructuring plan and execution, namely: 1. Will the CEO personally take ownership with his restructuring team in place or delegate/abdicate to a person? 2. Has he a firm restructuring plan on the cuts to be made besides making an announcement? 3. Any restructuring will cost the company money. The key is securing and delivering efficiently new sustainable, profitable sales and cashflow to recover the restructuring costs. Has he this in place as well? 4. How is the CEO to ensure his employees are motivated and not demoralised to deliver his eventual goal for IPO? As an turnaround, engineering professional, I have for the NSN CEO more operational questions for him but I do believe perhaps at best he is a good salesman and this CEO responsibility is beyond his capabilities.
