Our APM tools aid non-stop fund e-transfer

of the company, is extremely delighted that his company's investment in the Application Performance Management (APM) business is yielding good results, both in India and abroad.

The US-based company has already one of the largest banks in India using its APM tool to manage their Internet banking application and is in talks with a couple of other banks and vendors in the Insurance segment.

In an exclusive interaction with CIOL, Dotel talked in length about its APM offerings, business plans and growth strategy in the country. Here are some excerpts:

CIOL: What is meant by APM solutions? How it is helpful for enterprises?

Neeraj: APM is basically a set of tools used to manage applications, like when an application goes down, it detects the problem and fixes it. APM consists of several broad frames. One is the core application performance management.

If an application goes down in a data centre, it takes two or three days to identify and fix the problem. Every vendor has a solution to fix the issue once it is detected. Such solutions are called second-generation tools.

The tools provided by companies like IBM, HP come under this category. These tools are typically centered around servers, storage and network. They look at the infrastructure components and do network monitoring, server monitoring and database monitoring, etc.

But ours are third-generation tools. Our APM solutions – Gomez and dynaTrace – do not care about the infrastructure. In an organization, if an application faces some kind of problems, our APM solutions detect it and fix in a short span of time.

Gomez is offered as a service outside the data centre, while dynaTrace is a transaction tracing tool. The dynaTrace is a combination of three APM technologies - business transaction management, application performance management and user experience management.

Precisely, if the problem is within the data centre, dynaTrace will come handy and if it is outside, Gomez comes into the picture. dynaTrace is a combination of the three APM technologies.

The core function of third-generation APM tools is to make sure that applications are running perfect. If something collapses, Compuware's APM tools are capable of finding the root cause and fix it immediately.

If we take the banking sector, for instance, customers use online banking for fund transfer, ticket booking and mobile recharging, etc. The bank has to make sure its website is functioning properly. If an issue arises with regard to the website, it has to be fixed in no time so that the activities on the Web are not compromised.

If the time-out happens during an online fund transfer, the customer starts worrying about his/her money that whether it has been transferred or not. This is where our APM tools come in handy.

Most of our testing tools are available for download free of cost on our website. Anybody who is setting up a website or a mobile site can go and see how the application works on different devices.

What are the business models the company offers APM tools for?

Neeraj: In Gomez, SaaS part is cloud. The other part is deployed in the data centre. We have something called ‘Cloud Sleuth’, a community that actually tracks the performance of major cloud and cloud providers. In public cloud, if an organization is using multiple applications from different vendors, hosted in different locations, our solutions will help manage the applications.

If a customer chooses to deploy our tools, he tells us which cloud he has adopted so that we can interact with the cloud vendor. We give the vendor accurate diagnostic information at every stage of the transaction outside the public cloud and can point out the locations of discrepancies so that they know exactly where the problems is.

What are the company's promotional programs in India?

Neeraj: We have just started building up infrastructure requirements and are extremely serious about Indian market. We are educating enterprises about the benefits of our solutions and also in talks with channel partners.

By mid-November, we will be benchmarking at least 500 enterprises from both the Internet and mobile spaces. We are also looking at the government sector - to monitor the performance of every government website – and education, banking, insurance, telecom sectors.

What is the future plan as a company for APM?

Neeraj: Our future direction is entirely around APM as a primary flagship product, not only in India but worldwide. We continue to invest and develop mainstream tools because that’s our core business for many years.

There are two areas where we see a lot of traction in India - one is the APM business, the other being project and portfolio management.
