Applabs to open up TEMA for developers

Betting big on OSS space with tools like TEMA, it is also gunning for TMM certifications

OSS testing tools in general, have come up in comparison to the proprietary software testing tools and received both positive and not-so-encouraging responses. While OSS have been perceived more apt for white box testing that works on the test object’s internal structure; the proprietary ones fit in black box testing scenario where the test object is taken from an external input-output or functional perspective.

OSS downsides include lack of features and technical support required. These tools can however be tailored to individual customer and technology requirements. Likes of OSS testing tools include names like XUnit Family, Wiki-Wiki, Fit/Fitnesse, DBfit, XML Starlet while prominent proprietary software testing tools include QTP (Quick Test Pro), Load Runner etc.

In 2005, SpikeSource, a provider of business-ready open source infrastructure, included AppLabs as its testing partners.

Recently, AppLabs announced a partnership agreement with KnowledgeCore, an enterprise software solution company to support organizations in their implementation of SOA.

Commenting on AppLabs’ appetite, Chintala cites industry estimates from IDC, Forrester and Gartner putting the market size circa $54 billion in 2007, with the prospect of being increased to $63 billion by 2010. “On an average, software services are growing at about 10 to 12 percent, testing is growing at more than 50 percent per annum. Gartner has pegged the worldwide software testing market at $13 billion and the global market for outsourced testing services to be around $6.1 billion. Out of this, India is expected to corner 70 percent share of the outsourced testing market. Gartner also expects the market opportunity for Indian software testing companies will reach $eight billion by 2010 from the current $2 billion.”

He picks rapid application testing, test-driven development and distributed agile testing as the emerging and exciting areas of testing.

AppLabs specializes in quality assurance, certification testing and third party validation. ISVs form about 50 per cent of its business. AppLabs is a privately held company backed by Sequoia Capital that has pumped in $17 million in AppLabs.
