Spark IT 2010: Industry needs soln for project and functionality

BANGALORE, INDIA: What are structural factors as far as project management is concerned and what are their roles in a project’s success? In the last session of the project management at Spark IT 2010, Dr. M. R. Gopalan, director (Research) and chief editor of Focus, IFIM Business School, tried to lay his hand on these elements.

He took an International Empirical Study and its observation to talk about the structural factors, the types of organizations and management controls. The study was done through mail survey of 103 development projects in 30 different firms.

Gopalan said that various kinds of structural factor studies include organizational structure, managerial authority and the scale of the project (means by total cost).

He listed three types of the organization segments based on the roles of the project manager. One is the functional organization, where the project manager gets the work accomplished by the team. The second kind of organization is matrix organization, where functional people are temporarily attached to the project management till the project runs, and the last segment is the project organization, where the functional people are a permanent part of the project management and the latter makes the former to accomplish the project.

Based on the study, he talked about examples where management control system was in the hands of the project management, customers and the top management respectively. This was tabled over six measures of success such as cost, schedule, overall, Tech1, 2 and 3.

Dr. Gopalan said that a lot of Indian companies follow pure functional organizational structure. This system would not reap benefits in other countries, but they still succeed here because of the culture of the company of knowledge management.
